Honoring Marceline White, a True Consumer Champion!
Last night the Consumer Federation of America presented our Executive Director, Marceline White, with their Consumer Champion Award. This award honors advocates who “passionately work to empower consumers, promote transparency, and enhance the overall quality of life for consumers within their communities.”
Marceline has led Economic Action Maryland Fund (formerly Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition) for 15 years. Thanks to her work and vision, Maryland has been a leader in ending modern day debtors prisons, passing some of the strongest protections for patients with medical debt in the country and protecting students enrolling in predatory for-profit colleges.
Delegate Vaughn Stewart, a champion for economic justice in Maryland’s legislature who introduced Marceline at the event, put it best when he said, “Marceline was born with a bone-deep concern for people who are simply trying to get by.”
At a time when the federal government is actively dismantling consumer protections, our work at the state level is more important than ever. Accepting this award, Marceline committed to the fight ahead, saying, “We can recreate the world with a strong foundation – with new models – so all across the country we have strong protections that meet the needs of working families.”
