End Unfair Debt Practices

  • SB 939/HB1098: Increase the amount of a homeowner’s equity protected from debt collectors. Each passed their chamber of origin and need to be amended to reflect the stronger, Senate amendments before final passage.
  • SB865: Workgroup on the Affordability of Private Passenger Automobile Insurance – Extension and Alteration of Membership and Duties. Passed the Senate, waiting on action in the House.

Keep People Housed

  • SB353/HB523: Provide clarity to homeowners facing foreclosure and end zombie mortgage foreclosures. Passed the House, waiting on action in the Senate.
  • SB180/HB213: Expand ability for fair housing organizations to root out discrimination. Passed the Senate, waiting on action in the House.
  • SB335/HB315: Strengthen laws to protect renters from source of income discrimination. Each passed their chamber of origin and need to be amended to reflect the stronger House language before final passage.
  • SB937/HB1073: Give renters with a record a fair chance to secure housing. Passed the Senate, waiting on action in the House.
  • SB274 HB573: Strengthen fair housing law in Maryland by expanding the definition of discrimination to include the effect of a policy to discriminate not just the intent. Each passed their chamber of origin and need to be amended to reflect the stronger House language before final passage.
  • HB1456: Protect tenants and landlords from pervasive online rental scams. Passed the House, waiting on action in the Senate.

Expand Affordable Energy

  • SB2/HB1: Prevent utility companies from profiteering off of ratepayers. Passed the House, waiting on action in the Senate.
  • HB1532: Advance a suite of reforms to tackle rising energy prices and expand energy assistance programs. Passed the House, waiting on action in the Senate; needs strengthening amendments around EmPOWER energy efficiency goals.

Support Affordable Credit and Prices

  • Financial burden crossover graphicSB94/HB237: Prohibit payday loan apps from charging hidden fees and abusive tips. Passed the Senate, waiting on action in the House.
  • SB387/HB895: Prohibit grocery stores and online platforms from using dynamic pricing to overcharge consumers for everyday necessities. Each passed their chamber of origin and need to be amended to reflect the stronger House language before final passage.
  • SB582: Prohibit unsolicited checks for loans and home purchase offers received, unsolicited, by Marylanders. Passed the Senate, waiting on action in the House.

Oppose

  • SB589/HB433: As amended, would put on hold several legal actions currently pending against property management companies over abusive rent collection practices. Passed the Senate, needs to be defeated in the House.
  • SB383/HB28: Would allow private career schools to advertise before they have received state certification. Passed the House, needs to be defeated in the Senate.
