Please Attend! Economic Justice in Action: Power and Policy in the Age of Deregulation

The fight for economic justice has never been more critical. Congress is ramming through the federal budget bill, which threatens to reshape our economy in drastic ways. The bill would further enrich billionaires by cutting services and assistance for the families that need them most, from Medicaid to SNAP to student loan relief. It also makes policy changes that erode consumer protections, guts efforts to expand small business-lending, and funds anti-immigration practices and programs.

In Maryland, we’re working to understand how this assault on working people will impact our families and communities, particularly Black and Brown neighborhoods still living with the longstanding effects of redlining. We will be sharing analysis about the effects of this bill over the coming weeks.

While it is difficult to process the enormity of this bill which will enrich billionaires at the expense of families living paycheck to paycheck, we must redouble our efforts to protect low-income communities and close the racial wealth gap in Maryland. We know that together we can accomplish a lot.

As one example of what we can do, working together, I am sharing our 2024 Annual Report. Last year we were able to accomplish the following:

  • Returned more than $605,790 to low-income homeowners and renters;
  • Assisted more than 700 tenants struggling with landlord issues;
  • Filed 41 Fair Housing complaints; and
  • Expanded protections for patients struggling with medical debt, defeated high-cost lending bills, and thwarted attempts to further weaken consumer protection lending laws. We testified on more than 80 bills, organized opposition to high utility rates, led and participated in coalitions to expand economic rights against corporate interests.

Now is also the time to come together, reflect, learn, and mobilize for action. That is why Economic Action Maryland Fund, and our affiliated organization Economic Action Maryland, are hosting “Economic Justice in Action: Power and Policy in the Age of Deregulation” on September 25th from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. This inspiring policy forum will highlight issues that we can take action on in Maryland, and give participants new messaging and organizing strategies to tackle these challenges and build a Maryland that centers economic rights and equity. Tickets start at $55 and the event will include lunch, keynote speaker, breakout sessions, and our annual awards.
